✨ « If you love the law, you want to make it accessible » ✨
🎙️Our founder, Marie Potel-Saville, and Elisabeth Talbourdet were invited by NumeriCité to talk about the Legal Design as a powerful tool to close the bridge between the law and the users, and its different applications into the legal world.
Legal Design is a problem-solving method that combines design, plain language and a user-centric mindset to make the law accessible, actionable and engaging. This discipline emerged in the 2010s with Margaret Hagan, a lawyer and designer based at Stanford University. She identified the synergies between design and law and theorized the Legal Design in her well-known publication « Law by design ».
⚖️ More than ever, the law suffers from a lack of usability: blind consent has become the rule online, the « I accept » box could have been renamed « I don’t care! »… Applied to the law, design can restore its meaning and usability while maintaining its rigour and value. Design is obsessed with usage!
Legal Innovation by Design is more than redesigning contracts. To illustrate the various applications of Legal Design, Marie and Elisabeth gave several examples of Amurabi’s work:
💎 Designing compliance guides for in-house lawyer.
💎 Creating legal products such as a natural language legal search engine, or a digital platform between the global marketing teams and the legal division to facilitate communication between them and ultimately help them better manage risks.
💎 Designing privacy for underage users with the French Data Protection Authority (the CNIL) to create interfaces for kids and teenagers that facilitate the understanding and exercise of their data protection rights. And to equip designers with toolkits so that they can replicate the design of privacy for minors.
🌟… and so much more!
At last, Marie and Elisabeth highlighted our obsession for KPIs and tangible results which led us to create a User Testing Lab. Because beyond buzzwords, the most important thing with Legal Design is to ensure legal efficiency and user empowerment… And of course, the pleasure we have to receive feedback from our clients! 🙌
